I've been working on 3D from i think the fourth month out of the university and its really a deep deep subject. There are a ton of things to learn, manage, manipulate, experience, relearn, and eventually scrap. The hardest part is your client not understanding these complexities, which on almost all occasions, they would never care to. All they want is your best possible work on their most convenient time. How cruel XD
Its wonderful to be testing out varieties of techniques for doing something in 3D, its like painting in a sense. Unfortunately, 3D artists do have to contend within themselves to either specialize or not. Specialization leads to working on the same and familiar process over and over and over again which would eventually lead to some perfect version of a singular form of rendering. "Un-specialization", if there is such a term, would mean research and research and a lot of trial and error covering a very large range of technology which coincidentally, gets larger by the month.
The speed of hardware development has definitely surpassed software, and these software guys are trying desperately to keep up. Long past are the days when carrying a 1GB portable storage device meant you could drain out the school of information; Now you can be tugging along, in a package as small as a booklet, over 200GB of free space XP. And the days when you had to leave the computer overnight for a simple bedroom to manifest itself.
Hows this looking for 3D artists? grim! (at least this is my opinion)
Pretty soon, all renderings would be required within a span no longer than 3 days, from not so much as a drawing.. (of course in the movie industry this is not applicable but who knows XP) is this fair?
Would you like to enter this wonderland too?
I'm in it, and somehow, even though the odds may be against my wanting, i wouldnt want to get out ^_^ (every now and then mind you XD)
There's still so much left unsaid *sigh* but alas, mere words could not describe the joys of snapping vertices, applying textures, and hitting that render button eager to see the first point of light contact the way the artist had envisioned it.
We'll see how deep into this abyss I'll be wandering into.
^_^
